Allen Walton- The 20 Something Year Old Successful SpyGuy
Is opening an online store still a viable way to make money? One could ask Allen Walton, founder of SpyGuySecurity.com who launched his business as recently as 2014 but is on track to hit $2 million in total sales volume this year.
If that doesn’t excite the entrepreneurial spirit try this; Allen did it as a one person company, and he did it while still in his 20s. Oh, and his previous job was working for $11 an hour in someone else’s spy camera shop. Due to his success Allen now has at least one employee, but he has been written about by Forbes as one of many young entrepreneurs who have built their businesses to $1 million in sales as a one person operation.
Allen’s journey to success follows a very familiar road. While working for someone else, in their business, he learned how the business worked, what customers wanted, and even some of the shady tactics of certain business owners. It did not take Allen long to realize he could serve the customer better by opening his own online business.
One think Allen realized is that many customers buying spy cameras were not comfortable walking into a brick & mortar location to make their purchase. For this reason Allen decided that his business would be strictly online.
Allen initially invested between $7,000 and $10,000 in inventory and another $1,000 to build out his website and launch the business. He also did a crash course in search engine marketing and Google AdWords in order to find customers for his new business.
While he may have built his business to over $1 million in annual sales, Allen Walton does not consider himself any kind of an internet genius. He recently told one reporter, “I was a high school failure,” “I had a 2.9 GPA.” But he is quick to tell others that if you want to succeed in online business you are going to have to “crack open” some books and study some things you never thought you would need to study. He also advises would be entrepreneurs who have little experience to just take the plunge and get started by using pre-existing platforms such as Shopify or Yahoo.
Another pre-existing platform for small businesses and even artist is bigcartel.com where someone just starting out can have a simple website with 5 products for sale, completely free of charge.
Still based out of his Dallas Tx area home, SpyGuySecurity offers their customers about 100 products related to the spy camera industry.
